History Uncovered Women’s Polo

Women’s polo: When the war was over, women became a common presence as players. In 1964, Claire Lucas (Tomlinson) played in the Oxford versus Cambridge Varsity Polo Match as the first female player. In 1966 the club had entered her as “Mr Lucas”.  Claire Tomlinson and Lavinia Black lead the crusade to change the way women played polo. Claire’s handicap was higher than many of the men that participated and Lord (John) Cowdray suggested to her that she collect signatures from men to show their support and then request the HPA to consider letting women play in high goal matches.  Claire Tomlinson became the first woman to win the County Cup (1972) and the Queen’s Cup (1979).

When Lavinia Black and Claire Tomlinson, went to Argentina in the 1970s, many men had never even seen a woman play polo!!! In 1991, Claire captained the English team who won the first ever worldwide Ladies‘ International Polo Tournament. She was the highest rated woman polo player in the world at +5-goals and was England’s team coach from 2001-2008. Today of the 765 female polo members registered with the HPA only 20 have a handicap of 1 or above.

Polo Girls in Mexico

First International Copa Triángulo del Sol Beach Polo event hosted at Tres Vidas in Acapulco, Sept 12-14, 2014.

Over the weekend of September 12-14, Polo Girl Ellie Molyneux helped make polo history in Mexico by organizing and playing in Mexico’s first international women’s exhibition match in the Copa Triángulo del Sol beach polo event hosted at Tres Vidas in Acapulco. Mexico has a long legacy of producing top male polo players, including the late Carlos Gracida, but the sport is only just gaining public popularity in Mexico and there are only a handful of women who play across the country. Polo Girls are on a mission to bring polo into the spotlight for both men and women, and this past weekend’s tournament was a total success in that regard!

Thanks to the support of event organizer Nacho Egido and Polo Girl Ellie Molyneux’s coaching partner Miguel Gomez de Parada, Ellie was able to invite two American players, Kathi Kelly Lutton and Raeann Magill, to join in competition with Polo School Mexico students and teammates Maria Alejandra Suarez, Julie Adrien, and Bea Bringas. These six ladies received their team Tres Vidas and Roche Bobois jerseys at the luxurious Banyan Tree Hotel in Acapulco, and the president of the Mexican Polo Federation, Guillermo “Billy” Steta.

The women’s polo matches were commentated by the president of the World Polo Tour Javier Herrera, and in front of over 1,000 spectators, the girls competed hard while showing that women can, and DO, play polo! Team Roche Bobois won over Team Tres Vidas 2-1, and Polo Girl Ellie was awarded the MVP award from La Martina. We hope this is just one of many future events hosted by Ellie, Miguel Gómez de Parada, and Polo School Mexico, who are eager to continue to grow the sport’s popularity in Mexico and around the world! We thank the governor of Guerrero, Ángel Aguirre, and his affiliates for supporting the growth of polo in Mexico.

Have you ever bought a horse?

Buying a horse is not an easy task.  It is worst than car sales!

So when its time to buy a horse, make sure you do your research and ask around.  Horse dealers can’t be vetted so you need to get the advice of others who have bought from them.

Make sure you do not get screwed based on not having enough knowledge regarding the person you are dealing with.

Happy hunting!

Spicy Beer Chili

Its still cold out, so I am releasing to you my chili recipe! READ: DON’T GIVE TO YOUR PONY!

3lbs of lean ground sirloin

2-28oz crushed tomatoes

2-tps of olive oil

1-can of Chipotle Chiles (secret ingredient)

1-tsp of cayenne powder

2-tsp of chile powder

2-tsp of cumin

1-large onion diced

1-large red pepper diced

2-tsp of salt

2-cans of pinto beans

2-cans of kidney beans

1-can of your favorite light beer

Heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions, peppers, and sauté for 5 minutes.

Next add the ground beef and cook until brown—8-10 minutes—breaking up all the meat clumps.

Add the adobe peppers, chile powder, cumin and cook another 3 minutes stirring regularly. Add the salt,  tomatoes, beans, ¾ of the beer and scrape the bottom to deglaze.

Reduce and cook at least another 30 minutes—partially covered—until flavors are well combined and the chili has thickened. Stir occasionally.

Add a couple dashes of cayenne pepper for extra heat. Serve with favorite toppings and tortilla chips or cornbread!

Enjoy and Stay Warm my Polo Peeps!

Big Taste & Large Plates at The Yard Bird

The Yard Bird in South Beach, FL offers big taste and large plates.

The Food:

ORDER the fried chicken it was fantastic, the spicy maple syrup that was served was unbelievable!

Def try the Fried Chicken, Okra, Fried Green Tomatoes BLT’s, and Ribs

Pass on the Deviled Eggs, to much mayo and not enough flavor.  The Mac & Cheese was just alright, I’ve had better.

For Southern Comfort Food in South Beach, I can say that the Yard Bird takes the cake.
